A book redesign for Paul Rand’s “Design and the Play Instinct”
Redesign of Paul Rand's Book "Design and the Play Instinct"
What: In this project, I redesigned the book Design and the Play Instinct by Paul Rand. My goal was to make the design playful and inventive, while keeping it minimal and letting the message of the book take the main focus. Throughout this process, I learned about the relationship between form and content and how to embody a message within its own design.
How: I began this project by sketching out potential page layouts based on the content of the book with enough variety that I could have many options. Then, I created a storyboard using these layouts and applying them to the flow of the book. Finally, I began creating the pages in InDesign, paying careful attention to the formatting and how it would translate to print.
Result: This project taught me how to make designs that support and reinforce the main content, helping to illustrate the points being communicated. I also gained valuable experience in the process of brainstorming, formatting, and executing a book project, which has helped me in all of my design-for-print projects.
