Material Type
A Typeface Made from Found Materials
What: For this project, I was asked to create a typeface using found materials. My goal was to make it inventive and playful, while still having an underlying logic that unified it as a typeface. Throughout this project, I learned how to be inventive with how I approached design challenges, as it took a lot of experimentation before I landed on the final solution.
How: I began by hanging my materials on a wall and photographing them- paying close attention to the shapes their silhouettes made. Then, I began carefully cutting out their forms in Photoshop and arranging them in a document. Using this as my palette, I began combining the shapes to create letter forms. I eventually began flattening the forms into a solid color- erasing the details that differentiated them- which formed the unity among the letters I was seeking.
Result: This project was a huge personal success as both a unique decorative font and as a great lesson in the value of experimentation for finding unique design solutions. I learned how to unify disparate parts by finding an underlying logic, and the final result was well-received among my peers.
